IIT Madras wins National Intellectual Property Awards 2021, 2022

The Indian Institute of Technology Madras (IIT Madras) has won the ‘National Intellectual Property Awards 2021 and 2022’ organized by the Government of India. The university has been identified as the leading Indian academic institution for patent filing, grant and commercialization.

This award is given by the Department of Promotion of Industry and Domestic Trade, Ministry of Commerce and Industry, Government of India. Officials decide the winner based on patent applications, grants and commercialization.

“For any country to become a world leader, protecting intellectual property is vital. This award has certainly motivated IIT Madras to generate and protect more and more socially impactful intellectual property leading to Atmanirbhar products during the Amrit Kal,” said V. Kamakoti, Director, IIT Madras.

The total number of patent applications filed in India (at least one Indian applicant) in 2021 was 120 and 68 abroad. A total of 133 patents were granted in India and seven abroad, and the total number of patents licensed was six, five assigned and 11 commercialized.

These awards are given annually to recognize and reward top achievers including individuals, institutions, organizations and companies, for their creations and commercialization of intellectual property (IP), which have contributed to strengthening the intellectual property ecosystem. intellectual in the country and to encourage creativity and innovation.
