Kerala students asked to remove inner wear to get another chance to write NEET exam

The National Testing Agency (NTA) will re-conduct the National Eligibility-cum-Entrance Test-2022 (NEET) for “affected students” on September 4 at six centers across the country including Kollam in Kerala where female students they were forced to remove their inner wear before appearing for the July 17 exam.

An NTA circular said the exam will be re-conducted in six centres, only for the affected students.

Apart from Kollam, the other centers are Sri Ganganagar (Rajasthan), Hoshangbad (Madhya Pradesh), Kushinagar (Uttar Pradesh), Bhind (Madhya Pradesh) and Nagaur (Rajasthan). Affected candidates from each center could appear for the re-examination, which is not mandatory.

In the five different centers in Kollam, the affected candidates are Hindi level students. Only those who had appeared for the exam on July 17 could take part in the re-examination, the circular said.

The circular said there had been six separate incidents on July 17 that could require NTA to conduct the exam again.

The NTA has sent a communication to all students eligible to participate in the re-examination. The girls who had appeared for the NEET exam at Mar Thoma Institute of Information Technology in Ayur in Kollam on July 17 were informed that they would retake the exam on September 4 at SN Public School, Kollam.

Several girls who appeared for the NEET exam on July 17 at the Ayur center were subjected to insults after the women deployed by an agency contracted by NTA to search the girls forced them to remove their underwear which had metal hooks. The incident had sparked outrage after a number of students lodged complaints with the police. Seven people, including the women who searched the girls and the NEET coordinator, they were arrested in the incident.

C Gopakumar, one of the parents who took up the matter with the police, said that his daughter has received the communication about the re-examination scheduled for September 4. Many other girls who sat the exam at the same center have also been given another chance, but it is not mandatory for them to take the exam again. It’s just an option, he said.
