Mizoram CM seeks Centre’s help to set up new campus of Mizroram University

Highlighting the need to establish more higher education institutions in Mizoram, Chief Minister Zoramthanga called on Union Education and Development Minister Dharmendra Pradhan in Delhi on Thursday evening. He also informed him about the improvement of education in the state, said a statement issued by the state government.

The chief minister sought the help of the central government to set up a new campus of Mizoram University (MZU) in Lunglei town in south Mizoram, the official statement said.

He urged the Union Minister to extend assistance to ensure that the proposed South Campus of MZU at Lunglei is made functional at the earliest.

Pradhan, on his part, assured Zoramthanga that he would take steps to help the state, the statement added.

Recently, the State Minister of Higher and Technical Education, Dr. R. Lalthangliana, had informed the state assembly that the government would not be able to finance the creation of infrastructure for MZU’s south campus.

The minister had said that the Center wanted the state government to give the necessary funds for creating infrastructure for the university campus.

He said that in 2020 the Center had approved in principle the establishment of MZU South Campus and also asked the state government to acquire land for the campus and MZU, which is a Central University.

According to the minister, the state government has already acquired land for the campus and the land lease certificate has already been given to the MZU. He said that a detailed project report (DPR) prepared by the MZU had already been submitted to the Center for the establishment of the university campus.
