Online PhD programs offered by edtech companies with unrecognized foreign universities: UGC, AICTE

THE UNIVERSITY Grants Commission (UGC) and the All India Council of Technical Education (AICTE) have issued a notice advising people not to register for online PhDs offered by edtech companies in collaboration with foreign educational institutions , saying that these programs are not recognized by her.

In the warning, higher education regulators said students and the general public should not be misled by advertisements in this regard. The Ministry of Education has repeatedly warned edtech players against issuing misleading advertisements.

“In order to maintain the standards for the award of PhD degrees, the UGC has notified the UGC (Minimum Standards and Procedure for the Award of Doctoral Degrees) Regulations, 2016. It is mandatory for all higher education institutions to follow the UGC regulations. and its modifications for the awarding of doctorate degrees”, says a joint order of the UGC and the AICTE.

“These online PhD programs are not recognized by the UGC. Aspiring students and general public are requested to verify the authenticity of PhD programs as per UGC Regulations 2016 before taking admission,” the notice said.

Last December, the government issued a warning urging people to exercise caution while enrolling in online courses offered by edtech companies. It had also announced to come up with a policy to regulate the sector, but later decided to adopt a wait-and-see mode after a few edtech players formed a consortium for self-regulation.
