The University Grants Commission (UGC) and the All India Council for Technical Education (AICTE) have issued a warning against online PhD programs offered by ed-tech companies in collaboration with foreign educational institutions. According to the notice, these programs are not recognized as per UGC and AICTE guidelines.
The UGC and AICTE had warned their recognized universities and institutions not to offer distance and online courses in association with ed-tech companies, saying no ‘franchise’ arrangement was allowed under the rules earlier of year
“In order to maintain standards for the award of PhD degrees, the UGC has notified the UGC (Minimum Standards and Procedure for the Award of Doctoral Degrees) Regulations, 2016. It is mandatory for all Higher Education Institutions (HEIs) to follow the UGC. Regulations and their amendments for the awarding of doctoral degrees”, according to a joint order of the UGC and the AICTE.
Students and the general public are advised not to be misled by advertisements for online PhD programs offered by EdTech companies in partnership with foreign educational institutions, he said. “These online PhD programs are not recognized by the UGC. Aspiring students and the general public are requested to verify the authenticity of PhD programs as per UGC Regulations 2016 before taking admission,” the order said.
